Veronica at Toddled Dredge is clever, funny, and smart. Among the list of posts she decided not to write was this meme idea:
Ten Literary Characters I Would Totally Make Out With If I Were Single and They Were Real But I’m Not, Single I Mean, I Am Real, But I’m Also Happily Married and Want to Stay That Way So Maybe We Should Forget This
What’s not to love about this idea? Impossible to forget.
In spite of enthusiastic urging from her readers, Veronica is sticking with her decision and won’t offer up her personal snoggable cast of literary characters. Instead, she’s tagged 13 passionate bloggers and asked us to list ten snoggable literary characters.
So, without further ado, the ten literary characters I would totally make out with if I were single and they were real (in no particular order):
- Howard Roark, in The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand
- Terence Hewet, in The Voyage Out by Virginia Woolf
- Edmond Dantes, in The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
- Legolas, in The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien
- Aragorn, in The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien (who could resist?)
- Mr. Darcy, in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (of course)
- Hawk-Eye in The Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper
- George Emerson in A Room with a View by E. M. Forster
- Lord Peter Wimsey in the Lord Peter series by Dorothy Sayers (top drawer stuff, there)
- Daniel Deronda in George Eliot’s novel of the same name
I’m looking forward to reading other people’s responses. In the spirit of the meme, here’s a wonderful cinematic kisses video:

I had just started my response. Inexplicably I almost forgot Peter Wimsey even though Andy and I just had a festival of Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane videos. In the lonely years of my 6-year long-distance relationship with Andy, I only fantasized about him.
I would be embarrassed to admit my fantasies about heroes of romance novels, which, along with ice cream and peanut m and m’s, are a guaranteed anti-depressant.

I have to see the lists, (I’m over from Toddled Dredge).
Yes! Dantes, Aragorn and Mr Darcy! Most definitely snoggable!

Interesting. Good choices (I say as a man). I’m surprised you didn’t think of Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I think you would like him better than Lord Peter Wimsey.
I’ll think about it and give you a list.

Lord Peter’s going to be on my list too (if I ever stop cheating by looking at the other answers and actually FINISH MY LIST!).

Okay. Here goes:
NOTE: Some of these ladies would be too young to “snog” at the beginning of their book or series. I’m referring to the grown-up versions.
1. Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
2. Jo March from Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
3. Anne Shirley from Anne of the Island by Lucy Maude Montgomery
4. Marianne Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
5. Alexandra Bergson from O, Pioneers! By Willa Cather
6. Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare
7. Melanie Hamilton in Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
8. Helen Hudson in Magnificent Obsession by Lloyd C. Douglass
9. Margaret Schlegel in Howard’s End by E. M. Forster
10. Maid Marian in the Robin Hood stories

RG, wow! I actually had To Kill a Mockingbird in my hand today, and couldn’t decide between Atticus and Lord Peter. Either way, I could steam up someone’s glasses (though with Lord Peter, wouldn’t it be a monocle? haha).
On your list I (though female) agree that Jo March and Elizabeth Bennett are must-haves; at our dinner table tonight Elizabeth Bennett was on most of the males’ lists (as Darcy was on all the females’ lists!). I would have picked most of your heroines.
Bubandpie, it does ruin it a bit when you read other peoples’ lists. I had to restrain myself from listing Father Ralph in The Thorn Birds, which was the first mention on Veronica’s post. I knew I’d better hurry, or my thoughts would be clouded.
Or was that… steamy?

Ok, I have to stop reading other people’s lists as well. Mine seems to be completely different from everyone else’s and I actually started to make changes – Hawkeye didn’t make mine, how could I forget him!! And then I decided to go with my original list. I’ll post mine on Monday. I normally post every weekday and I wouldn’t want to confuse my reader(s).
jadepark // October 7, 2007 at 11:40 AM |
OMG, you and I like most of the same men! George Emerson was my literary crush in high school! (As was Howard Roark). Okay, let me think about this, and I’ll do it soon.
Eve // October 7, 2007 at 3:22 PM |
Mary Jo, I didn’t know there are Lord Peter Wimsey vidoes! What? Where?
And to think that I’ve merely been reading books all this time.
Tell me that the actor playing Lord Peter won’t make me hate Lord Peter, please.

Hans Solo. No one else close. Watched it 70 kazillion times when kids were small.
jadepark // October 8, 2007 at 9:24 AM |
Oh yes–Han Solo–but but but! Is he a literary character? If he is, then he’s on my list too!
Eve // October 8, 2007 at 9:55 AM |
Jade, I think we have to make Han Solo a literary character!
AlphaDogMa // October 8, 2007 at 12:03 PM |
Oooh, Hawkeye. He almost made the cut, but its been so long since I read the book he was dumped. And yes, yes, yes to George Emerson. Great list!
(I followed you here from Toddled Dredge)

Eve,
About the Lord Peter videos: There are two separate sets. The ones by Ian Carmichael I didn’t like at all. I did like the Peter-Harriet Vane ones: they star Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walters. I thought Peterbridge was too old, but then I forget Peter was in his 40s when he married Harriet.
